Pros & Cons

Reasons to buy:

User Reviews

  • Very lightweight
  • Really durable despite being aluminum
  • Provide good traction on all but hardest ice
  • The anti-balling plates work well
  • Can withstand some impacts with rocks
  • Good at side-stepping and front-pointing
  • Good for ski touring since they can easily be adjusted to fit your hiking and touring boots
  • These are so light I have no problem tossing them in the pack even if I am not totally sure I need them
  • Versatile – can be used on everything from running shoes to mountaineering boot to ski boots
  • Light enough to justify taking everywhere
  • They nest into each other nicely

Expert Reviews

  • The linking bar is very easy to adjust, even with gloves on, to switch between different footwear
  • For their intended purpose as a lightweight walking and ski mountaineering crampon, they do the job perfectly

Reasons NOT to buy:

User Reviews

  • Not ideal for clear ice
  • Don’t fit large sized boots well
  • Straps are too long and should be cut down after purchase
  • A little narrow for wide feet

Expert Reviews

  • On steep, hard glacial ice (around 45-50 degrees), the crampon occasionally came off the front of my boot when kicking the front points in
  • The strap version of these crampons do not fit on all alpine touring boots very well. In some cases, the toe can come loose when walking.

Summary:

These surprisingly durable aluminum crampons are very lightweight, which makes them an easy choice to throw in the pack when snow or ice might be encountered. While not intended for steep or technical ice climbing, they are super versatile and easy to fit in the field to different boots. As a result, they are a popular choice for hikers, backpackers and backcountry skiers.
