Pros & Cons

Reasons to buy:

User Reviews

  • A nice blend of the Big Agnes Copper Spur and Fly Creek.
  • Easy to set up.
  • Extremely light weight.
  • Doors are well designed and thought out.
  • Having two doors when you have a dog is great.

Expert Reviews

  • Very easy to set up.
  • Extremely lightweight.
  • The two vents provide nice airflow.
  • Very well ventilated.
  • The zippers on the fly have gutters to prevent water from spilling in when you unzip.
  • Prioritizes being lightweight without skimping too much on comfort.
  • Good privacy panels for crowded areas when you’re not using the fly.

Reasons NOT to buy:

User Reviews

  • Tent materials are ultralight and therefore you need to use a footprint to avoid ripping the bottom of the tent.
  • Realistically, the 3 person tent is really a more appropriate size for 2 people and the 2 person tent just barely fits 2 people.
  • Outer wall can’t be guy lined or staked out properly and therefore you can’t maintain space between that wall and the fly. A problem when windy or wet.
  • The bathtub floor of the tent is too shallow and can touch the ground when both doors are open, allowing water to flow into the tent.
  • The bathtub floor is too shallow and allows dirt to get in.
  • The fly is not effective at keeping dirt from blowing into the tent under very windy conditions.
  • Like most Big Agnes zippers, they are lightweight but fragile.
  • Very bright inside the tent, even with the fly on (not necessarily a bad thing.)
  • The fly sags in rain and will touch the tent wall, causing condensation to enter the tent.
  • Other tents have more headroom and better layout inside, but they weigh more.

Expert Reviews

  • A bit of a funky floor plan inside.
  • While tent can technically stand on its own, you need to stake it out to get full floor space.
  • The foot end of the tent is tapered so you may need to use tapered sleeping pads (which are pretty standard nowadays).
  • Inner zippers have a tendency to snag.
  • If you are sensitive to light, know that the fly isn’t opaque so moonlight or sun easily light the inside of the tent.
  • Rain water splashes under the fly and can enter the head of the tent through the mesh or tent fabric (above the bathtub).
  • Door zippers can be tricky to use which slows your entrance and exit (a problem if it’s raining or buggy).

Summary:

The Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2, UL3 Tent is incredibly lightweight while still providing a good level of comfort. Due to its lightweight construction, it is not the most durable or full featured backpacking tent, but for those concerned with weight and packability, it is hard to beat this tent.
